The drive into the Bugs is a big adventure, all on its own.
Head North from Radium hot Springs, or south from Golden, until the turn off signs for Bugaboo Glacier appears. From the turnoff, follow Bugaboo signs for 50 or so km. The road is a dirt road, mud if its raining hard. There is a really good chance that one may see a bear. The drive will seem to be forever, and without warning, the road branches, one for climbers parking, and one for the CMH Bugaboo Lodge. Turn right, this last bit of potholed road, will lead you to a thirty-car parking lot.

Dont forget the Chicken wire.
The parking lot is stalled out with logs, rock and fencing rolls. The porcupines love the rubber hoses, and a very few numbers find themselves with no breaks on the way out. Drive right in., unroll the chicken wire all the way around the vehicle, log up the sides, and rock the bottom of the fence. Make sure you get everything out before you fence in your vehicle.

Marmolata Mountain
This unmistakable peak is there in your face as you approach the steep uphill. The trail is very pleasant following the mellow valley bottom. The trail winds through a very thick and marshy dense forest. The boardwalk leads you to the wonderful start of the uphill. Take a layer off here because youre going to need it.

A beautiful waterfall, crashing through the forest.
The start of the uphill, takes you past this marvelous waterfall. The breeze blowing off the speed and force of the water hitting the bottom of the drops, the fine mist of water in the air hit you in the face. Everything is great now, a good cool down. One day I was approaching the hut, and found two people bivying theyre near the falls. I bet they got wet that night.

Josee looking over to the Bugaboo Glacier
The trail works its way up the slope in a gradual way but any way the trail goes up. There are lots of opportunities to take beautiful pictures of Bugaboo Glacier, Seen here in this picture. The blue in the ice when view in real life is so amazing, make you want to run down the slope and put your ice climbing stuff on and go atter. The views are so amazing it is hard to watch where you are walking and tipping over things is always happening.

Josee testing her skills at ladder climbing.
Switchback after switchback leads you to the waterfall area, steep slope with a rock slab in the distance. The switchback leads to a platform and a rock wall. There is a ladder bolted to the rock and is quite handy. Although, the rock face to the right is quite challenging on it’s own. Drop the pack to give that one a try. I swear v3 or so. The ladder is only the start of a wild trail that leads through all the rock. Steps have been cut into the granite rock and cable wire has been put in to hang onto. Awesome, steep, beautiful, and most of all tiring. |

The Conrad Kain Hut : Bugaboos
Soon as the rock section is finished, a few more pleasant remaining switchbacks, a wood bridge crossing, the hut is now in sight. You can hardly contain yourself and you feel like running, but every time you try to pick up the pace, you cant, due to the lack of energy. The Conrad Kain hut holds 50 people. Three floors, top two for sleeping, and the bottom floor, kitchen, eating area. The hut is equipped with pots and pans. It is suggested to bring your own fork, plate, and spoon. Running water, propane stove, two outhouses, one urine center, and one major bowel deposits. Cool bouldering over the crappers, if there empty.

Josee checking out the legend himself, Conrad Kain.
The hut is amazing, the space that you have, location, the views from inside and out, Its all good. I have always stayed here at the hut. I’d rather pay the extra money, and not have to carry the tent, pots, pans, stove, extra warm cloths, etc, etc, etc. I love packing my craging pack up with the essentials, and a sleeping bag (summer), and food. Much lighter and faster moving. Freak storms may come, but I am dry. |
